Gone is a multi-disciplinary design studio in Chinatown NYC. Functioning as both showroom and workshop. It is a place for gathering as much as for making by hand. Founded as an evolution of the former brand Upstate, the practice moves fluidly between textile, glassware, sculpture, installation and objects shaped for the body and space. All textiles are dyed in house using small batch, experimental processes. Glassware is produced within the tri-state area in close collaboration with local makers. Each piece reflects a commitment to slowness and the physical intelligence of materials.  Gone operates as a living practice, one that values collaboration, education, and communal exchange alongside design and production.  

A note on the transition from Upstate to Gone

Upstate emerged in 2010 from a specific place and a devotion to the process and making things by hand. Over time, the work began to resist those boundaries, asking for a different scale and rhythm. The word Gone marks a deliberate unfixing, a release from geography and from product as endpoint.  Gone holds space for disappearance, change, and reinvention. It acknowledges that nothing static stays alive. The brand had to shed its former skin in order to evolve. With Gone the practice now moves fluidly between textile, sculpture, installation, and forms shaped for the body and space… with material inquiry at its core.  We believe this direction will  open space for long-form collaborations, institutional contexts, and communal ways of working…where the work can remain porous, evolving, and unresolved. While we are still deeply committed to making…the work is asking to live in a different register now. We want the work to be experienced, walked through, felt, inhabited. The shift isn’t away from craft, it’s into it. Deeper, slower, and more expansive.  Opening the brand to communal work feels essential such as workshops, education, and dialog in our studio , these elements are part of the practice at Gone. Treating process as meaning instead of end product as meaning. We are increasingly drawn to work such as object-fabric installations, performance, spatial interventions, museum contexts. With-in these formats allowing the work to breathe, to interact with bodies and space, to exist temporarily and intentionally.

We make all of our hand-dyed items in our Chinatown, NYC studio. The space serves as a working area to bring new ideas to life, a showroom of our creations, and a place to gather for events and workshops.
